3 main blood groups:
1) Group A
2) Group B
3) Group AB
4) Group O
GROUP A
- Contains antigen A
- Contains anti-B (antibody against antigen B)
- Can receive blood group A, O
- Agglutinate when exposed to group B, AB
GROUP B
- Antigen B
- Anti-A (antibody against antigen A)
- Can receive blood group B, O
- Agglutinate when exposed to group A, AB
GROUP AB
- Contains both Antigen A, Antigen B
- Has no antibody
- Since it has no antibody, it can receive all blood groups.
- It can only donor to blood group AB. Administration to group A, B and O will cause agglutination.
GROUP O
- Has no antigen. Hence, it can donate blood to all blood group.
- Known as universal donor
- Contains Anti-A. So it will agglutinate when administered to blood group A
- Contains Anti-B. It agglutinates if administered to person with blood group B
- Also agglutinates when administered to group AB.
- Can only receive from blood group O, as opposed to blood group AB.
